Newport, RI Weekly Event - Kids' Corner and Food Passport Program Every Wednesday
Connect the Dots - Release and Detox
May’s Mind Key Issue was Release and Detox
Release verb re·lease \ri-ˈlÄ“s\
: to stop holding (someone or something)
: to allow (a substance) to enter the air, water, soil, etc.
: special treatment that helps a person to stop using drugs or alcohol
: to remove a poisonous or harmful substance from (something)
There are so many types of and ways to detox or release. You can go literal with it and physically release
clutter in your home or office or toxins from your body. Or you can go figurative with frustration,
stress, anger, preconceived notions, and societal expectations.
Detox is a word and a concept that is bandied around a lot
on the internet as a way to “clean out” your system and it’s not always the
answer. In Do you really need that detox?
and Simple Steps for avoiding a Detox, Dr. Lisa M Avila talks about other ways
your body may be deficient and ways to bolster instead of tear down your body
for optimum health. Barbara Steingas
encourages Breathing for Detox instead of putting harsh chemicals in your body.
As a special Mother’s Day treat, Danielle wrote about the
special waves of release that every mother must go through to accept their new
role in The Release of Motherhood.
Release is different for everyone, though. Rebecca wrote about her inability to be like
a duck and let the water of attention roll off her back in The Impossibility ofLetting Go. She finds that once
something has her attention, she obsesses on it, weathering the storm. I, on the other hand, enjoy Coloring for Stress Relief.
Release, letting go and detoxing can be a very healthy
pursuit when what you’re encountering is having a toxic reaction within your
soul. As they sing in Disney’s Frozen… Let it go!
Let it go!!!

5 Products that could save you from a hangover - Tips and Tricks
Good timing with Memorial weekend at hand, here are some hangover remedies we found to help you though that AM slump.
Hangovers are nature’s not-so-friendly reminder that too much of a good thing isn’t always all that grand. Even so, we’re not ones to let that deter us from enjoying our glasses of Sauvignon Blanc, or imbibing an Old Fashioned. And while there may be a ton of do-it-yourself remedies out there to help you beat the aftermath of a night out, sometimes you’re in need of something a little stronger, and more formulaic, than some greasy food and a Gatorade. When that’s the case, here are the products that will let you have your wine and drink it, too.
There’s no reason that a (really) fun night and a productive morning should be mutually exclusive, which is exactly why Prime has made it its mission to offer up the best of both worlds. Promising to let you “rock today” and still “roll tomorrow,” the vitamin B-, amino acid-, electrolyte-infused anti-hangover solution makes bouncing back from a night of drinking look almost too easy.
There are few scenarios – as much as we hate to admit it – in which sleeping off your problems is actually going to help you. Fighting off a hangover, though, happens to be a rare instance where the method works. And since quality sleep isn’t exactly the likeliest byproduct of a night spent drinking, the all-natural, herbal sleep drink, reBloom, can help you doze off in no time, and help you wake up feeling surprisingly refreshed.
While your body breaks down alcohol into toxins like acetaldehyde, RESQWATER is packed with ingredients to protect your system and help detoxify it. Plus, not only does the scientifically formulated recovery drink fight off hangovers, but it also alleviates post-workout muscle soreness. Which kind of means that “working out” and “getting wasted” are the same thing, and that “going to the bar” might count as “going to the gym.”
The ship for having never been too hungover may have sailed, but Never Too Hungover can at least save you from ever being too hungover again. Loaded with ingredients like milk thistle, which detoxifies and protects the liver, and green tea extract, which promotes oxygen flow, Never Too Hungover is the perfect blend of vitamins and nutrients to make preventing a hangover as simple as getting drunk was in the first place.
Taking an electrolyte solution made for kids may seem counterintuitive when you’re tackling an exclusively adult dilemma, but Pedialyte is actually a pretty effective way to counteract the dehydration that leaves you feeling groggy after a few glasses too many. While the solution’s sodium content helps your kidneys retain more water, Pedialyte simultaneously replenishes your body’s potassium supply, which your body loses a lot of every time you hit the restroom between drinks. It doesn’t hurt that you have kid-approved flavors like strawberry and mixed fruit to choose from, either.

Letting Go with Oracle and the written word
Professionally, I am a teacher. That is how I pay my rent. How much teaching is done by my own volition? I am not sure sometimes. However, I am sure that leading others to writing as a primary source of detox is the best kind of teaching I can do. As a writer, artist, educator, and participant of the Mind Key project, my purpose has leaned more toward helping others find the stories they need to tell. As resistant as some may be, every single person has a story in words, pictures, or song. Once the creative outlet is found, we can let go of everything else which feels the need to hold us back.
Creativity is an integral part of connectedness and restructuring, and some of us need a little more than guided journals or story-starters to produce writing for healing. A deck of oracle cards can create the bridge between emptiness and fulfillment - and fulfillment, healing, and connectedness are the necessary molecules of Mind Key. That same deck of oracle cards can also lead you to release things that are no longer serving you.
Three years ago I never would have thought that a deck of cards could hold so much power. When I taught Pre-K several years back, a mother of one of my kids gave me an email reading with a deck of angel oracle cards that floored me with its accuracy and depth.

My very first deck - Chakra Wisdom Oracle Cards by Tori Hartman |
Though I was initially skeptical due to my tainted metaphysical past, I quickly learned there was something genuine about the use of oracle decks. There was no, “I see a scratch-off lottery win in your future.” There was no, “Someone you know on the other side is trying to contact you! She has a vowel in her name. A…E?” Nope, Janan was legit, and she was my first exposure to the spiritual tool of card divination.
In addition to learning different spreads and letting the messages and the pictures speak to your life, many oracle decks can be used as journaling and storytelling devices. In fact, if you check out the web pages or YouTube accounts of many tarot and oracle enthusiasts, you’ll find that many use oracle decks to help motivate a variety of creative endeavors. In a previous blog, I reviewed Leonie Dawson's Create Your Shining Year workbooks and mentioned how effective Dawson’s approach was to planning and visualizing a productive year. I may not have mentioned, at least not in much depth, the use of her favorite oracle deck to create a foundation for each month. A card can be drawn once a month, or twelve cards can be drawn at once. Either way, Dawson’s workbook devotes several pages to your own oracle card insight and reflection.
From The Chronicles of Destiny don't leave home without it. |
The versatility of oracle cards is tremendous, and the freedom of expression they induce often surpasses the tarot system which is more concrete. In a way, oracle decks are your every day, “average Joe” source for card divination, for lack of a better description. Nevertheless, a new enthusiast who wants to use oracle cards for journaling and creative writing may run into a problem - deciding on a deck. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of decks from independent publishers as well as large publishing houses such as Llewellyn and Blue Angel.

This, ladies and gentleman, is how I let go of the mundanity of every day life, when I need to remember that there is something more to me than this and that. Check out my next column about the decks listed above which will include recommendations for using them as creative and reflective tools.

The things our body holds
The things we hold onto—emotions, hatred, old patterns—they hold onto us in very physical ways.
About six years ago I began to understand this truth while experiencing Somatoemotional Release, a type of body work (like massage or chiropractic work) based on the inherent memory of body tissue. In other words, you may have physically healed from a trauma (such as a fall or impact) but the tissue retains the memory of the injury. This can cause muscles around the traumatized area to tense as if they still needed to protect the injured tissue. Since the body has essentially healed from the actual injury, Somatoemotional Release allows the body to release that trauma so everything else can relax and realign.
Much of this can be (although not always) be connected to our mental memory of the event. Sometimes releasing the emotions connected to the injury is sufficient to ease the tissue memory. On the other hand, sometimes releasing the tissue memory eases the mental/emotional trauma of the incident.
In "Making Space: Your Weight Loss Plateau," I talk about how the body requires room in order to hold onto all the mental and emotional baggage we carry. That while we still carry this baggage, we make it difficult to let go of the physical space in which we carry it. This was a concept that took seed back in 2013, while trying (for yet another year) to lose enough weight to fit into a bikini. As I share in "What's in a bikini," that experience taught me that we stuff much into our clothing—much more than the weight we carry… which makes me wonder what else that weight represents.
Recently, while self-studying the physical and emotional benefits of herbs, I discovered a truth about lumps (such as cysts, blemishes or tumors). Blue violet readily dissolves lumps in the body. This was the first herb I ever worked with, and the only success I had in trying to remove a ganglian cyst my doctor was convinced needed operating. Since then, I've learned that violet also eases heartache. I've used it often for this purpose as well. I've often suggested working with violet for the remedy of both concerns—dissolving lumps and to ease the heart. At this point I realized, quite poignantly, that lumps are a manifestation of heartache, or lack of love.
Interestingly enough, chickweed is another herb that helps dissolve lumps in the body, and it also helps dissolve fat.
Other organs are believed to hold certain emotions: the liver, anger; the lungs grief; the kidneys pent-up emotion. Poor vision is often the result of things we do not wish to see, while poor hearing represents that we don't want to hear. How easily we could move through pain and hurt, and heal ourselves if we could allow ourselves to let go of the feelings and experiences that are no longer serving us.
I was taught that bottling up your emotions is not healthy. I was taught this in an effort to avoid "bottled-up-outbursts." Now, as an adult, I realize it is not the outbursts that do the truest harm, but the way the body holds onto these emotions that we do not face head-on and accept. Only once we do that can we truly let go. Only then can we truly heal.
