Yin and Yang is kind of like Left and Right brain thinking

In talking about balance and Yin and Yang, I can’t help but think about right and left brains.  I took one of those stupid Facebook quizzes recently and it told me that I'm 76% Left brained (focusing on Symbolism) and 24% Right brained.  I am a very linear thinker.  Things are orderly.  Numbers don’t lie.  I am not flowery, I am squarely in “the box” so when someone says to think outside the box, I'm at a loss.  Make up something on the spot without parameters, I don’t think so.  So 876% left sounds about right (or correct as the case may be.)
“So, if you’re so left brained and non-creative how can you be a poet and so successful at Charlapalooza?” you might ask.

If you don’t remember or weren’t subscribed at the time of Charlapalooza, the quick and dirty description is me against another poet writing quick poems about suggested topics.

In response, I would say, “Because you all told me what to write about!”
There was a large and glaring difference between the poems that Danielle Rose (my last competitor) wrote and those that I wrote.  Mine were shorter, condensed and more literal translations of the suggestions.  Danielle’s were more creative, more outside the box.  Here’s an example.

Kim Hartnett’s suggestion was “Seashell Secrets” and she said it needed to be an alliteration
My poem read:

Seashells have sensual secrets
Tickling temptations and tonal tendencies
Undertones of the undersea
Vestiges of the voluptuousness
Wanton and willful
X-rated and exhilarating
Yummy
Zing

Danielle’s poem read:
The cool touch of it against my ear
Screamed with the sound of the
Waves crashing high over my head.
Instantly brought back to the summer,
Those moments with my feet in sand
Like snow, sun like charcoal on my hair.
What I wouldn’t give to be there again,
Listening to the water racing on the shore
And racing back again. The unending cycle.
What I wouldn’t give to be back there,
Lost in the sound of that seashell.
Softly slipping water, sliding over
Shells and sounds of the seashore.
What I wouldn’t give to see him once more
On the softly sliding slopes of the dunes.
The secret slippery slope of a seashell.

See what I mean?  Here’s another.

Secret desire – By Danielle Rose
  ~suggested by Dahlia Ramone
There’s a door in the forest
Covered by trees.
If you look carefully you’ll find
A mound of sweet purple blooms
That have no business in that shaded
Grove, basking in rays of sunlight
Covering an oak slab door.
What I wouldn’t give to give up
The meatloaf for dinner, the emails
For work, the laundry needing folding.
I’d run to that grove, sneaking into that
Streamer of sunlight, breathing in the
Blossoms, escaping forever into the
Unknown of that oaken secret door.

And mine:

1:23 AM
The dogs are barking again
Nudge Jon without hope
Swing legs over the side

Toss on a robe and slippers
As the dogs dance in excitement
Glad I’ve acknowledged their need
To bark at stuff probably

Trudge downstairs
Dogs leading the way
Open the sliding glass door
Rush to talk to their imaginary mid-night friends

Open the pantry and look for chips
Try and get them down quietly
As if
Nothing’s quiet in the sleepy silence

Sit on the couch
And gently crunch a handful
Let the dogs in and
Grab just one more – handful that is

Share the last couple chips
Begrudgingly with the dogs
              One to each
Creep back to bed

See what I mean?  We think differently.  And that’s what makes the world awesome.  Our differences.  If we didn’t have differences, the world would be monochromatic, monotonous and boring.

Do you think you’re right or left brained?  If you'd like to check out the other poems that were written for Charlapalooza (and there were other great poems including one about a mouse living in a tennis ball!) click the links above to check them out.

Meet Charla

Charlapalooza is OPEN FOR VOTES!

The poems are written, and the voting is open...
Now read about the Mind Key member, editor and all-around amazing woman who started this crazy train, then continue scrolling to vote for your favorite poems.

Mother, blogger, cyclist, travel enthusiast, accountant and writer, Charla Dury blogs about her experience in humanity.  Whether fact, fiction, poetry or creative nonfiction, Charla’s writing brings out the human experience in each of us.

“We are all part of one big human family and can relate to each other on multiple levels,” Charla said.  “It doesn’t have to be only skin deep.”

One of the most profound reasons Charla blogs is to bring back a sense of community and connectedness that is often lost in the world of technology.

“In this day and age when we’re all only a touch/click away, I feel like we lose ‘touch’ with the world around us,” Charla said.  “We only post the good on Facebook.  My blog can sometimes not be so positive.  I try to be real.”

This is perhaps more important now than ever.  To keep herself connected, Charla participates in her kids’ activities whenever possible, gets in touch with her environment by bicycling, and builds an connected community online through her blog.

“Connections are an important part of the human experience.  Humans crave (and need) to be connected to each other, to the environment and to community.”

To Charla, spirituality is just another connection to the peacefulness inside herself.

“I believe in a higher power.  Someone/thing that guides the world.  And I believe in doing all we can to be kind now, not because it will get us anywhere now or later, but because that is what’s right.”

Inspired by the global community of the myspace days, Charla’s blog began as a source of balance and introspection.

“Back in ye old Myspace days I had a blog and I connected with so many people. I realized that I wasn’t alone and didn’t have to feel alone in my singularity, in my uniqueness.  We can be unique and still connect with people around us.  It’s not like we become the same by sharing life experiences.”

Many of her friends have younger children, but not as many with older kids, who have different issues - teenagers, kids that have moved out, and dealing with the balance of being both a parent and an adult at this time, spurring her current blog, Charla’s Neverending Journey, to be about family issues, especially those with older kids.

But it’s more than that.  As a teen mom, Charla never had the time to discover herself, and blogging about her experiences as both a mother and an individual is part of that journey.

“That constant journey of discovery and trying to figure out who the hell you are and what you want to be and what you want to do and I think that’s really hard.”

That difficulty is part of the reason why her blog covers a variety of topics.  Perhaps the one undertone that runs through them all is finding time each day, however small, to do something for herself.  In her search of a community that understands the difficulties of being a younger parent of older kids, she has created one in her blog.

“I blog so that I and other people won’t feel alone in our circumstance,” Charla said.  “A sense of community.  Everyone has something that they connect with people about.  The blog is about what people get from it, connecting on different planes and different issues.  How everybody no matter the circumstance can connect.”

Check out Charla’s brainchild (and baby), Charlapalooza, where the world suggests topics, and Charla and a competitor (in this case, Danielle Rose) write poems about them.

Charlapalooza Memories

October, 2006. The gauntlet had been thrown, and Charla and I prepared for the mental gymnastics that were soon to follow. Two poets enter. . . well, two poets leave. As far as I know, no one’s brain has ever exploded from Charlapalooza. But only one poet will be victorious, their reward the knowledge that they have mastered the art of pulling a poem out of their ass. It didn’t matter that my highest level of poetic training was high school AP English, or that I had never willingly written a poem in my life. What mattered was the blood-thirsty fans that threw the most ridiculous topics at us, yet not once did I cry uncle– not even when the topic of BANANA HAMMOCKS was suggested.

What mattered was the mostly foolish but occasionally beautiful poetry that otherwise would have never existed.  What mattered was how much fun it was to spar with such a worthy opponent (let’s face it, I was outmatched). I will always remember my Charlapalooza with fondness, a day that my work production came to a grinding halt, but the creative juices flowed like. . . uh. . .well, they flowed.

And now, a snippet of my last surviving poem from Charlapalooza. The topic was: Sunday Drive.

Too strong to resist, despite “No Entrance!”
Especially this night, a full-moon Yule.
Small waves lap the sun-bleached remnants of trees–
Bones of giants aglow in Artemis’ rays.
From the shore, the sea calls me closer still.

Deep into Poseidon’s depths I must dive–
A turmoil of bubbles; I’m in his realm
Flying as sure as any bird in the sky.
Schools of fish perform intricate ballets;
Beyond the shelf’s edge, secrets of the abyss…

How Charlapalooza rocked my world

Danielle Rose and Charla Dury in 2007
Strict guidelines, ridiculous suggestions, and sometimes tight forms totally stretched my creative muscle back in 2006 when I first (most willingly) fell victim to Charlapalooza.  First of all, I met and became great friends with Mind Key Member, and creator of Charlapalooza, Charla Dury.  Secondly, of my best poems—a few of which were subsequently published—ensued.  Not only that, but Charlapalooza gave my writing exposure I had never experienced.  A ton of new readers, a spot on a Blog Talk radio show, publication, and editor positions were all to follow as a direct result of my participation.   From there I was invited to and traveled to poetry festivals, further building my network and my social networking skills both in person and online.

I suppose you could say that without Charlapalooza Mind Key as we know it wouldn’t exist.  And perhaps because so much of my growth and success came from my writing and my readers, I’ve turned to this again as a fail-safe way to bring the Mind Key Members success, and to bring the Community (all of you!) more of what you are looking for as you discover your personal legend.

It’s all about stretching ourselves, and today we’re stretching again.  We’re used to the stretch of writing under quick deadlines, and coming up with quality work for insane suggestions (in fact we revel in the opportunity), but now we’re wondering how the heck to make Charlapalooza work on a platform that’s completely unlike myspace.  We’re running it on multiple platforms.  We’re figuring out how to promote and garner interest on Facebook, via our blogs, a newsletter, a website, and through the Mind Key community.  It’s not easy, but we’re learning, and in the process of stretching and learning we’re better learning how to get the word out there about our passions… and how we can use our talents to help others.

So there you have it.  One incredibly awesome game, created by one incredibly talented lady, brought into a new age for the good of all…. It’s exactly what Mind Key is all about—passion, connection, and a fairly good amount of work and levity.  Nice job Charla!

Meanwhile, here’s a little peek at a couple of my poems from previous Paloozas.  There’s still time to leave a suggestion for this one (window for suggestions closes at 10pm EDT), and even if you don’t, I hope you will return later this week or early next to read more and leave some votes for your favorites (anyone and everyone is welcome to vote!).

This suggestion was a poem about this guy... without using the word "pink."

It’s SALMON I say, but no one listens,
as I pedal past their wide eyed children.
It keeps me warm! I argue, It’s a Ralph Lauren!
But no one cares, they only point and stare.

It’s a battle against cancer, but not of the breasts
It’s a guy thing, the newest race
unicycles for prostates! Salmon the new hue,
The suit a gift from Mom, how could I say no?

Pinkies extended in that secret greeting,
Who needs Avon, when we have ESPN?
Seeking donations, cycling for days,
it’s sure to be this year’s biggest convention.

This poem was a request to write about the suggestion “Labia.”  Interestingly enough it not only won that topic for the Palooza, but was later published in a literary journal.

The first soft kiss upon a child’s sweet head;
Lips roughly pulled aside
to make way for the newborn.

The origins of Charlapalooza and what it means to me

Charlapalooza is a blog game that sprouted on my old Myspace blog back in 2006.  I was writing a semi-successful blog about life, the universe and everything and wanted to be more interactive with my audience.  Back on the Space, people would actually comment on blogs but I wanted more.  I figured that I enjoy challenging myself and, since I am NOT a poet – or don’t think of myself as one – but love words, I decided this would be a good way to do it.  So, I got my friend Medussa on board and we called for topics from my many blog subscribers.  Lots of people showed up!

Suggestions ranged from the serious to the silly and Medussa and I furiously wracked our brains and wrote our hearts out.  People voted on their favorite poems and we all had fun.  It was a success!

So much so, that I decided to do it again!  And again.  My plan was to do one each month.  It was a good plan at the time.  What I couldn’t predict was the insane turnout of people.  They fell from the woodwork to suggest topics for my challengers/friends and me.

I held a total of 6 Paloozas over ten months and my challenger and I wrote upwards of 25-40 poems each time.  I didn’t even usually win, when the votes were tallied!  The folks I wrote with were talented and more creative than I was.  Being a very linear, logical thinker kind of hurts when you’re trying to be all outside the box.  It helped me stretch my mind, however, and that’s all that mattered.

I’m trying to make my current blog (Charla’s NeverendingJourney) more interactive by bringing the Palooza back.  So here goes!  Click here if you’d like to participate in Charlapalooza 2.0!!!

Here are a few of my favorite poems from the Paloozas:

Suggestion – A metaphor about the moon

The moon is the crystal ball I consult
In times of heartache and strife
Feeling the ridges and crevices
With the fingers of my mind

Looking into its depths
I can read like the tarot
Feel the sway of the universe
Beneath my looking glass

My crystal ball confirms
Happiness and accomplishment
In the wink of an eye
The turn of a shadow

Suggestion – Epoxy grout and a 12 hour work day

While epoxy grout is the most durable around
It’s also the most difficult to apply
Great for kitchen counters and tile floors
Detergent added recently makes it slower to dry

Knowing all this is great
But you spend twelve hours on your knees
Laying this shit is backbreaking labor
I’ll take a day on myspace, please

Dirty, grimy, gritty and tired
I drag my ass home to my kids and wife
I pride myself on doing a good job
But I sure do miss my life

Charlapalooza 2.0 is open for suggestions!!!

Awesome Charlapalooza banner!!!

Welcome one and all to Charlapalooza 2.0!!!

Charlapalooza is a blog game where a challenger and I take suggestions of topics on which to write poems.  Begun on myspace circa 2006, we're resurrecting the game for Mind Key. To see some of the old suggestions and poems we wrote way back when, check out my warning post from last week.

This week my challenger is Danielle Rose. She and I will be writing poems based on your suggestions.    We have decided to go with a website called Formsite for both the suggestions and the voting.  I've embedded the code below to allow you to suggest right here in the blog.

Whew!  This is so much more darned work!  (Mostly for Danielle.  Even though this is called Charlapalooza, she's spearheaded the whole submission and voting process.  You rock, woman!)

Anyway, make your suggestion and we'll write you a poem!  We're hoping to get a running list of suggestions for you to peruse to pique your interest in coming back.

Ready?  GO!!!
