NJ Event - Summer Jazz Room 7/18-7/22

If I were looking for music to soothe the savage beast, jazz would be my top choice.  Listen outdoors, and you've got a double dose of healing.  William Paterson University's jazz program seems to agree. Whether you're looking for one evening of entertainment, or a weeklong ticket, they're offering fantastic prices this summer to see performers in their renowned jazz program--and their outdoor sessions are free! --weather permitting--

WP Summer Jazz Workshop Faculty
with Winard Harper
Jazz on the Plaza: WP Summer Jazz Workshop Staff Quartet, 6:15 p.m.

Opening night of the WP Summer Jazz Series features special guest drummer Winard Harper with the Summer Jazz Workshop facultyCecil Bridgewater on trumpet, Tim Newman on trombone, James Weidman on piano, and Marcus McLaurine on bass. Harper is a dedicated mentor to many young jazz musicians in the New York region, and he has performed with Dr. Billy TaylorDexter GordonBetty Carter, and others. This concert will kick off the week with flair!

Johnny O' Neal
Jazz on the Plaza: The Alex Stein Quintet, 6:15 p.m.

Be-bop pianist and blues singer Johnny O'Neal is a jazz treasure who has returned to the New York jazz scene after a prolonged absence. O'Neal has a virtuoso style influenced by Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson and has played with a who's who of jazz greats. O'Neal is a mentor to aspiring young jazz musicians. This is a great opportunity to hear a legendary jazz master perform live and local! 

Karrin Allyson with Big Beat
Jazz on the Plaza: The Duane Eubanks 4tet, 6:15 p.m.

Vocalist Karrin Allyson brings an insightful and emotionally convincing approach to multiple styles of jazz and pop songs. The five-time Grammy nominee appears with Big Beat, a big band composed of many outstanding area musicians, led by WP music professor Stephen Marcone

THURSDAY, JULY 21, 7:30 P.M.
Erik Friedlander's Oscalypso
Jazz on the Plaza: Brandon McCune & Rhythm of the Moment, 6:15 p.m.

Erik Friedlander is a multi-faceted musician who is an acclaimed jazz cellist, contemporary music improviser, composer, and producer. Friedlander has produced numerous albums as a leader and is a much sought-after studio musician and sideman. He has worked with a diverse roster of artists such as John ZornJoe Lovano, and Courtney Love. His body of work includes documentary and feature film scores, ads, and dance works. This summer, Friedlander brings his quartet Oscalypso to the WP Summer Jazz Room stage with a tribute to the great jazz bassist and cellist Oscar Pettiford.

The Heath Brothers Quartet with Steve Davis
Jazz on the Plaza: Bruce Williams' More to Go Quartet, 6:15 p.m.*

Continuing the WP Summer Jazz Room Friday tradition, The Heath Brothers Quartet will perform with special guest Steve Davis. A preeminent trombonist, Davis has recorded eighteen albums and has played with Art BlakeyChick CoreaFreddie HubbardHorace Silver, and his mentor Jackie McLean. He joins the Quartet co-led by jazz icon Jimmy Heath, the 2016 WP Summer Jazz Workshop Artist-in-Residence and National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master. Co-leader Albert "Tootie" Heath will appear on drums, along with pianist Jeb Patton and bassist David Wong.
