Spirituality based on Film

Spirituality based on film.  I find myself shaking my head.  While films like Avatar definitely encourage thought, I find it hard to lend credence to cosplayers or regular, everyday people who would worship at the “tree of Utraya Mokri” were it real.  Phrases like “I see you” have crept into the language of our society with stealth.  I have to admit, I like that saying, though.

Star Wars is another film whose principles have gained many followers.  The Star Wars memorabilia area at Comic Con was by far the most popular with my family last weekend.  The films have actually spawned many discussions in my household.  Being surrounded by boys (including my husband) who love the series, we’ve talked a lot about the story lines and the duality of the characters (Anakin and Luke Skywalker) and their struggles between the dark and the light side.

Toby has taken this dichotomy even further by investigating both Jediism and Sithism.  He says he’s torn between the two and which he feels more intensely toward.  Toby has bought books on each (yep, there are books) and studied them.  Below you can see the differences between the two belief systems.

Jedi Creed

I am a Jedi, an instrument of peace;
Where there is hatred I shall bring love;

Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
Where there is injury, pardon;
I am a Jedi.
I shall never seek so much to be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
The Force is with me always, for I am a Jedi
.

Sith Code

Peace is a lie.
There is only passion.
Through passion I gain strength.
Through strength I gain power.
Through power I gain victory.
Through victory my chains are broken.
The Force shall set me free.

–The Sith Code

I, for one, hope Toby chooses the light of the Jedi.  I do understand the pull of the power of the Sith,
