What the faeries think of us

Photography by Kely Luzio-Cardona
what is a faerie, and why not call them fairies? Learn more HERE

There are many beliefs on who the faeries are and how they view humanity at large.  What is their role in this world, and what is their role in our lives?

Faeries are in large part energy, but they also live in part in our world, on Earth.  In fact, they cannot live without Earth, and it is their duty and their purpose to keep earth spinning.

They also believe it is our purpose in living here - to work with them to keep the world turning, to keep it happy and healthy for it is our mother and our child in turn.  Shame on us, they say, for not looking at it otherwise.

Yet, the faeries are carefree and wild.  They don’t expect us to be any different.  They don’t expect
humanity, which in their opinion is more wild than they, to do what they don’t.  After all, we work hard, we care for our families, work at our jobs, keep up our homes.  We build and connect and help each other.  Many of us think humanity is dark and trouble, but the faeries know they are dark and trouble, too.  They don’t look down on us for being who we are.

They are, however, saddened that we have forgotten where we come from.  “This,” I hear, “is an unforgivable sin.”  Then in the same breath, “but we don’t believe in sin.”  Then they titter, and flit away.

Sigh.  Such is the life of a faery.  Maybe one day I will get a straight answer… but then again, as my blog on Time so clearly states, there are no straight lines, so why should there be straight answers.

So I am hesitant to fall into the trap of those who say the earth and the faeries, and all who protect the land we live on are angry, or even saddened by our actions (or inaction).  They know we are simply on our path.  I’m also quite spiritual, but hesitant to say that God and the Universe is angry or saddened that we do not always act as God has guided us to.

Instead my spirituality leads me to believe both stories in part.  We HAVE forgotten where we’ve come from, and we HAVE forsaken the land in which we live… but not completely.  And if it makes us dark, or makes us bad, then so what?  Humanity was never meant to consist of all light or all goodness.  We did not come here to be at peace - we could stay in Spirit for that.

Ahhh… The faeries breathe.  Now you’re getting it.  As a race we are too lax on ourselves and too hard, both.  We are here to learn, and here to remember.  No one is as disappointed in us as we are in ourselves.

We work hard to make the world a better place without reflecting on what might be best for the greater whole. In this way we create for other living spirits an oppression that we fight tooth-and-nail to be rid of ourselves.  Is it no surprise we cannot bend things to our will - we humans who refused to be bent to anyone’s will?  The faeries understand this, even though we may not.

Faeries for Beltane

Artwork by Brian Froud
What is a faery?

There are many definitions and belief systems for faeries and their role on earth.  A common thread through most stories and beliefs, however, is how Beltane, or May Day, is one of the faeries primary holidays.

Because May Day (May 1st) is fast approaching, I thought it appropriate to share some thoughts on who the faeries are, what their role is in our lives, and how we can try to contact them as the days draw closer to one of their favorite festivals… which also happens to fall on a full moon this year.

As I wrote in a November blog, Faerie, or faery, is a broad term for the millions of different kind of elemental spirits that live with and among us.  They embody the magic behind the science of things.  They are the reason the flowers bloom, the snow glistens, and the waves crash upon the sand.  Sure, science has these things figured out, but the spirit behind them is purely faerie. . . Classifying faeries is far more difficult than defining them (although, they tell me all the time they don’t like either).

Faerie artist and tattooist Scarlet Sinclair said, “To me ‘faerie’ is a way to describe and put faces on the spirits inherent in nature, whether they are tangible things in nature such as rocks or trees or flowers or unseen things in nature such as energy, emotions or magick.”

Stay tuned this week for more stories on faeries, what they think of humans, and advice on seeing faeries for yourself, including note (that I believe makes a lovely meditation) from Norwegian faerie artist Soso Erlenkamp on getting into the right frame of mind to meet your own faery friend or guide.

A week of magical encounters

Once upon a time in a magical castle in France, believers from around the world met with renowned artists Brian and Wendy Froud, to embark on an adventure of a lifetime.

As is true of many of the world’s modern-life adventures, much of this story took place in the minds and imaginations of these men and women.  This is not to suggest, however, that imagination equates to fiction.  Indeed, the beauty of these stories is that although they may have seemingly come from the mind, their translation onto paper only proves their inherent truth.

In fact, this was exactly why most of these adventurers came to learn under the tutelage of the Frouds, who see and sense the faerie realm so acutely.

It began with a vision from Heidi Leigh, owner of AFA Fine Art Galleries in NYC and worldwide.  Gentle mastermind, Brian Froud was at first hesitant to translate his art into a lesson for others, but with the encouragement of family and friends such as Carol Douglas, he subsequently agreed to lead three week long master classes at Heidi’s most enchanting castle-turned-art-gallery in the Aveyron region, Belcastel, France.

We were questers, seeking insight, understanding and a mere glimpse into the Froud’s world of faerie, and in doing so we discovered more about ourselves than art.

The content of these classes remain a mystery, as those who did not attend could not experience the full extent of Brian’s magic without direct contact (and perhaps we only touched upon his magic as well).  As too is their connection to each other - a story best told by friends over a cup of coffee or glass of wine, perhaps with a plate of fresh cheese and bread.  How each student arrived at this destination between worlds is another story altogether - one that tells of manifestation and destiny.

Perhaps most importantly is that the stamp of faerie is on each student who experienced these weeks in Belcastel over two years ago… and this week’s blog  posts will begin as a feeble attempt to tell their unfolding saga in time for another reunion with the Frouds during their book signing at AFA galleries in Soho on October 10th.

Coalescence Holistic Expo - a joining of likeminded people and ideas

Coalescence is the bringing together and joining of like-minded people, ideas and things.

The Coalescence Expo, set for Sunday, September 14th from 1-7 pm, was created when Kathy Steinberg was guided to join the local Rockland County area’s spiritual and holistic community.

“[This is] an opportunity for vendors, healers, speakers and psychics/intuitives to gather and interact with others,” Kathy said.

Kathy is a Licensed Master Social Worker and was the owner of Good Vibrations Personal Growth Center and New Age Shop in Suffern, NY.  During this time Kathy said a community formed around the Center and Shop.  Although the space closed in 2008, the community continues to thrive through her website WeHealTogether.com.  Kathy currently works as a therapist and healer in Suffern.

According to intuitive Star Blossom Goddess: “Kathy’s willingness to help others is unfounded. I am honored when I am in her company and find myself being a sponge to experience her wisdom.”

Mitchell Cooperman from Shido-Kan Karate of Mahwah and his partner, Lorin ONeal of MaYoga Meditation have also been a part of creating a local community through their business, programs and events.  Their participation in the Coalesence Expo and the use of their space in Mahwah was simply a natural extension of their work.

“For the spiritual/holistic practitioners, networking and expos can be too expensive and I felt that it was important to create a venue that was an affordable way to connect with others,” Kathy said.

The Coalescence Holistic Expo is scheduled for Sunday, September 14th – from 1pm to 7pm at MaYoga Meditation, 1029 MacArthur Blvd., Mahwah, NJ.  There will be 4 rooms –one for vendors, one for psychics, one for healers, and one for presentations (running every hour).  A $5 donation is requested at the door to donate to Shelter Our Sisters Organization, a domestic abuse victim support service located in Hackensack, NJ.

What’s at the Coalesence Expo:

Psychic and intuitive readings, healers of varying modalities, presentations on energy and healing, and vendors of varying wares including jewelry, crystals, oils, aura photography, artwork and more….

The Realm of Faerie by Danielle Rose

I’m so pleased to be a part of Trinity Summer Fest this weekend at the Sussex County Fairgrounds.  Although I will be in the company of many other intuitives, psychics and readers, I know that what I have to offer the metaphysical world is unique unto itself.

I’ve been in contact with the realm of faerie for as far back as my memory goes.  The faerie realm is a powerful energetic field that interacts with humanity on a very base level.  Just as angels are an intricate link between spirit and humanity, faeries link nature and and mother earth to those chosen to walk it - us.

The list of authors, artists, and healers who helped me recognize this truth are many and varied, but I would be remiss without mentioning Brian Froud, especially the light and color of his artwork as portrayed in The Faeries Oracle deck.  These faeries speak quite loudly to me (with many thanks to the encouragement of Jessica Macbeth) and eventually led me to one of the most fulfilling and purposeful careers in my life.  I learned to hone and trust  my intuitive abilities through hundreds of readings for others using Brian’s deck and others.

This weekend I will be sharing my readings as well as selling magical apparel and items such as hand made wings and herb-filled dream pillows and medicine bags for meditation with faerie.  Additionally I will be teaching workshops on plants and stones useful for contacting faerie, how to recognize if you’ve touched upon their (or another) realm, and elements of dreamwork.   There will also be faerie games for kids and adults, and instruction and hands-on practice communicating with the faeries yourself.

For families and those who like to be more hands-on, Saturday will bring a wing decorating workshop, how to make your own dream pillow or medicine bag, and fairy gardening crafts for even the youngest of fairy lovers.

I will also be spending plenty of time talking about Mind Key for those interested in learning more or in being a part of the Mind Key Project either as a business, artist or individual.

Please feel free to contact me at Danielle@MindKey.me to learn more, or stop by the fairgrounds Saturday and Sunday and see what magic arises!
